Countywide Coat Drive Underway Through October
First 5 Colusa launched a countywide "Coats for Kids" drive, collecting new/gently used children's coats through Oct. 31. Goal: 500 coats for families in need. Drop-off sites include First 5 Colusa, Tri Counties Bank, and Family Action Centers. Distribution in November.
COLUSA, Calif. — First 5 Colusa has launched its first countywide “Coats for Kids” drive, inviting residents to donate new or gently used children’s coats through Oct. 31 to help local families in need.
The organization set a goal of collecting 500 coats this year, reflecting both community generosity and the level of need seen among Colusa County families.
“In previous years, other local agencies organized coat distributions, but those programs haven’t been available in nearly a decade,” said First 5 Colusa Executive Director Ginger Harlow. “Recognizing the growing financial strain many families are facing, especially during the holidays, we felt compelled to step in.”
Donations can be dropped off at several collection sites throughout the county, including First 5 Colusa at 217 9th St., Suite B, and Tri Counties Bank at 600 Market St. in Colusa, as well as the Williams Family Action Center at 315 9th St., Suite A, and the Arbuckle Family Action Center at 815 King St.
The effort is supported by community partners including Colusa County Community Advocates for Parents and Children (CAPC), Tri Counties Community Action Partnership (TCCAP), Tri Counties Bank, and others. Local service clubs and businesses have already stepped forward with early donations.
Families earning less than 200 percent of the federal poverty level can apply for assistance beginning Oct. 13. Coats will be sorted by volunteers in early November and distributed at Family Action Centers throughout the month.
“We’re collecting coats for all ages,” Harlow said. “Every contribution helps keep a child warm this winter.”
Families interested in applying to receive coats can contact First 5 Colusa at 530-458-5555 or visit a Family Action Center in Colusa, Arbuckle, or Williams for more information.
