Veterans add new tribute bricks to Colusa memorial wall
Veterans of Colusa County added over 50 new tribute bricks to Wall 10 at Veterans Memorial Park, honoring local service members. This continues a tradition of recognizing sacrifices, with over 1,200 bricks installed. Funds are also being raised for two bronze statues.
COLUSA, Calif. — Veterans of Colusa County placed more than 50 new tribute bricks at Veterans Memorial Park on Wednesday, Oct. 8, continuing a tradition of honoring local service members one name at a time.
The new bricks were added to Wall 10, the latest of ten tribute walls that each hold up to 135 engraved names of veterans who served during times of peace and war. The walls stand as the centerpiece of the park, where the community gathers each year to remember those who wore the nation’s uniform.
Local veterans have installed more than 1,200 bricks since the project began, recognizing the sacrifices of men and women from Colusa County who served in every branch of the military.
The veterans group continues to accept applications for new bricks. Families, friends, and community members may purchase a tribute brick to honor a veteran, with proceeds supporting the continued maintenance and expansion of the park. Order forms and guidelines are available through the county website at https://www.countyofcolusaca.gov/643/Tribute-Brick-Order-Form
Alongside the tribute walls, the Veterans of Colusa County are raising funds for the park’s next major addition; two life-sized bronze statues that will stand near the flagpoles. One will depict a saluting soldier with a plaque reading, “Honoring all of those who have served.” The second will feature a battlefield memorial with rifle, helmet, and boots, accompanied by a kneeling soldier holding an American flag.
The bronze figures are expected to cost about $100,000, and fundraising is ongoing. The project is a joint effort of the Colusa County Veterans Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2441, and the Maxwell American Legion Post 218.
The community will have several opportunities in the coming weeks to support local veterans and the memorial project.
On Nov. 11, the association will hold its annual Veterans Day Golf Tournament fundraiser at the Colusa Golf and Country Club. Check-in begins at 10 a.m. with an 11 a.m. shotgun start. Teams are encouraged to pre-register, and hole sponsorships are available. For more information, contact Joe Bowers at 530-845-1846 or Duane Nokes at 530-701-9413.
At 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 11, the Colusa County Veterans Association, in partnership with VFW Post 2441 and American Legion Post 218, will host the annual Veterans Day Ceremony at Veterans Memorial Park. The program will include a guest speaker and the reading of every name inscribed on the ten walls.
Through the bricks, the ceremonies, and future plans, Colusa County’s veterans continue to ensure that service and sacrifice are never forgotten.
